Catuaba Bark (Trichilia catigua), also refered to as catagua, chuchuhuasha, tatuaba, pau de reposta, came from the word Guarani which means “what gives strength to the Indian”. The bark and Root are both useful parts but their bark is the main portion that is used in medicine.
Catuaba is a small growing tree with yellow and orange flowers. It produces an oval-shaped fruit that is not edible. Its usually grown in Northern regions of Brazil. Both large & small trees are grown. Large trees can grown up to 30 feet in some places.
Catuaba Bark helps to ease agitation and has been used as a remedy for dementia. It stimulates the nervous system & enhances male libido. The bark is also used to treat insomnia & high blood pressure. A study conducted in 1992 revealed that its extracts were also very useful in early prevention of bacterial infections. Another study was also published saying that catuaba bark’s extract is very effective as an anti-depressant. In culinary field, Catuaba bark is used as a flavoring in British cola drinks. People claimed that they feel more energetic and calm after drinking the sodas.
