Ashwagandha root (Withania somnifera) is native to India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Ashwagandha, also known as Ajagandha, Indian ginseng, Kanaje Hindi, Winter cherry, and Samm Al Ferakh, is a plant belonging to the nightshade family, Solanaceae.  It is a stout shrub that grows to 5.5 feet tall. The plant produces yellow flowers and a red, berry-like fruit that has milk-coagulating properties.  The Ashwagandha plant’s long, brown, tuberous roots are utilized for medicinal purposes.

The Sanskrit meaning for Ashwagandha is “horse’s smell”, maybe originating from the smell of its root which resembles that of sweaty horse.  The species label somnifera means “sleep-bearing” in Latin, implying that it was considered a sedative, but it has been also utilized for sexual vigor and as an adaptogen.  Some herbalists dub ashwagandha as Indian ginseng, since it is utilized in Ayurvedic medicine in a means similar to how ginseng is used in conventional Chinese medicine.  Withania somnifera was called apollinaris and also glofwyrt in The Old English Herbarium according to Anne Van Arsdall and had a legend that Apollo saw it first and presented it to the healer Aesculapius.

In Ayurveda, the leaves and berries of Ashwagandha are topically applied to tumors, carbuncles, tubercular glands, and ulcers.  The roots of the plant are used as herbal remedy traditionally used to treat different symptoms and conditions. For centuries it was used as an aphrodisiac for its stress-relieving qualities and to remedy general weakness and exhaustion.  In Ayurveda, certain herbal formulas are thought to be revitalizing. These formulas are termed Rasáyana tonics, and they are typically used over long periods of time to revive both brain and body tissue. In rare cases an herb such as Ashwagandha is so potent and has numerous health benefits that Ayurveda regards it to be a Rasayana therapy on its own.  Ashwagandha was also traditionally used as diuretics and for treating memory loss under the Ayurvedic system.

In fact, four Japanese and seven American firms have filed for permit on patents for formulations containing extracts of the herb.  The Japanese patent applications are connected to the use of promoting reproductive fertility and as a skin ointment. The U.S based company, Natreon, has also acquired a patent for an Ashwagandha extract.  The New England Deaconess Hospital, another US establishment, has gained a patent on an Ashwagandha formulation believed to alleviate symptoms associated with arthritis.

The product called “ashwagandha oil” is a combination of the plant with rose water and almond oil, created to be used as a facial toner, and cannot be ingested.

The main chemical constituents of Ashwagandha are steroidal lactones and alkaloids which include cuscohygrine and tropine. The leaves bear the steroidal lactones, withanolides, particularly withaferin A, which was the first withanolide to be taken from plant.

Currently, Ashwagandha is very helpful for erectile dysfunction, lack of sexual drive, loss of strength, and spermatorrhea.  It is also used as health restorative for old persons, uterine infections and to cure insomnia due to the sound sleep it produced.  Ashwagandha can also be mixed with oyster shell and Valerian root for insomnia.
